1. Discover up-and-coming grapes. Everyone knows about Merlot, but often, lesser-known grapes are a good price (it’s a supply and demand thing). For example, if you love Merlot, try Carmènere from Chile. These are exceedingly good values right now, because nobody knows about them!
2. Go outside of the Country. High-end Napa Cabs are indeed first rate! But frankly, in the under $20 range, there are better places to score good values than California. New Zealand whites, Chilean reds, and Spanish anything is a good place to start.
3. Go for the box! Boxed wines have gotten so much better over the years! Remember—one 1-liter box is four bottles—and at $20 a box, that comes to $5 a bottle. That’s a great way to serve a crowd.
4. Find a great inexpensive label, and stick to it! We often find that if we like a winery’s style in a inexpensive Chardonnay, we’ll like their inexpensive Merlot, too. Once you land on a label you trust, a roll of the dice on another grape within that label is a good bet.
5. Join the Club. The Better Homes and Gardens Wine Club works closely with wineries to get great deals on wines. Not only do Club members get two great wines delivered per month to their door, but they can purchase more wines at great prices from the Better Homes and Gardens Wine Club Cellar.
