Tasting Notes
Feminine scents of plum, cassis, and strawberry float up from this dark ruby red. Thick with oak, the flavor continues with vanilla, mocha, and berry throughout the satiny finish. A leafy character enhances the spicy tannins. Tangy on the tongue, where cinnamon and cedar make an appearance. Drink now.
Winery Story
Even when wine is made in California, it is hard not to compare the product to French wine. Vineyard settings are also compared between the two countries, with a view towards how the landscape might influence the flavor of the wine.
St. Emilion, a region in Bordeaux, France, has vineyards with a very thin layer of clay and limestone soil over a base of limestone-ideal conditions for Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes. Monix wines are produced in the small region of Oak Knoll (in Napa Valley), which is very similar in soil and climate to this region in France. Continuing the tradition of Bordeaux, Monix Merlot was raised in French oak barrels. They hold the wine for 18 months, giving premium reds time to develop oak flavor and for tannins to soften. Monix wines are perfect with any meaty meal, and if you don't get a chance to enjoy this bottle with a barbecue now, savor it in early autumn, relaxing by a patio fire pit.
