Tasting Notes
We’re suckers for feminine wines like Lange’s Pinot Gris. “I closed my eyes and felt like Cleopatra being fed grapes surrounded by bouquets of fresh flowers,” Maureen gushed while tasting this white. While we’re not recommending recreating ancient Egypt at home, we’re all for this wine’s seductive floral and citrus notes.
Winery Story
It takes quite a vineyard to draw a musician away from LA's music scene, but that is just what the red hills of Dundee, Oregon, did to Don Lange. A songwriter based in Santa Barbara, Don and his wife, Wendy, shared a love of wine, especially Burgundies, France's famous Pinot Noirs. Californian Pinot Noirs at the time didn't speak to the couple, but when the two tasted bottles of Eyrie and Erath Pinot Noirs (found at a local, forward-thinking wine shop), they loved them. And, when the pair decided to change careers, they decided Oregon was the place to be.
After apprenticing and learning their way around a cellar, Wendy and Don purchased their own vineyard and committed themselves to growing and making great Pinot Noir. As for making Pinot Gris, a relative of Pinot Noir, they found the challenge interesting. "It is a very versatile grape," comments Wendy Lange, "made in lots of different styles. We were offered the fruit and made our mark with it." The opportunity and challenge of Pinot Gris resulted in the first barrel-fermented version bottled domestically.
