Copen Kin Vineyards

Tasting Notes

This wine has the classic profile of a Cab from Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley, with aromas and flavors of red currants, vanilla, thyme, and Spanish olives. Its slightly lean and spicy character results from the grapes being grown in Sonoma's comparatively cool climate. Enjoy it for its contrast to big, ripe, hot-weather Cabs - and for its ability to pair well with herbed dishes. Drink now.

Winery Story

Copen Kin Vineyards is named after a German family that migrated to California by way of West Virginia. Their wines capture the spirit of the original immigrant settlers who got to California, planted original European vines, and made wine. Some of the vines from this period are still harvested in Sonoma Valley, and wine lovers everywhere are grateful. Old vines like these are known to produce some of the most complex grapes in the area and are therefore considered treasures.

The favorable climatic conditions and diversity of soil and terrain suited the needs of grape vines perfectly. The majority of the grapes for the Copen Kin Cabernet Sauvignon were grown in the Dry Creek Valley. This is a more sheltered northern appellation with warmer days to promote ripe fruit flavors. The steep hillsides and rugged terrain force vines to struggle, yielding smaller, more concentrated berries. The arid growing conditions are combined with cooling afternoon fog to lengthen overall growing time, creating an almost nirvana for red wines like Zinfandel, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
