Tasting Notes
The 2004 Orphelin is a blend of Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache, Cinsault, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Souzao, Touriga, and Malbec. This medium-bodied wine bursts with luscious notes of ripe currant and plum preserves on the nose. Vibrant Bing cherry flavors with hints of spice and leather linger on the palate.
Winery Story
Chateau Ste. Michelle’s winemaking team was presented with a quandary after wine from most of the 2003 vintage was already blended: What should they do with the extra barrels of wine they discovered in the cellar that did not have a home? Predominately Rhône-based varietals, these “orphaned” barrels became the base for a blend that illustrates the enormous potential for Rhône-styled wines from Washington. The winemaking team named the wine “Orphelin,” the French word for “orphan,” and debuted its 2003 vintage exclusively to wine club members—and it sold out quickly. After the success of the first vintage, the winemaking team knew those barrels would never be orphaned again.
Founded 1934, Chateau Ste. Michelle has been producing wines since 1967, and 2007 marked their 40th year of winemaking in Washington. Owning 3,400 acres of vineyards in some of the state’s oldest and most prestigious sites, Chateau Ste. Michelle is synonymous with crafting high-quality wines spanning all price points.
