Tasting Notes
Sangiovese is the primary grape in Chianti and an extremely food-friendly wine. The perfect California interpretation of an Italian varietal, this wine displays aromas of dried cherry, strawberry, and a hint of rose petals. Flavors of red plum and vanilla wrap around a core of ripe raspberries with a lovely succulent finish.
Winery Story
Maggie and Harry Wetzel purchased the land that would become Alexander Valley Vineyards in 1962 from the family of ranching pioneer Cyrus Alexander—the person the valley is named after. On the estate was an adobe building and family home that dated back to the 1860s. When the Wetzel’s purchased the property, they lovingly restored these buildings, and the former Alexander family home is now the primary residence of the Wetzel family estate.
In 1975, Maggie and Harry produced their first wine, with eldest son Hank as the winemaker. Today, Hank’s younger sister Katie serves as winery ambassador, and the family hired Kevin Hall in 1998 to be the winemaker for the property. With a masters in enology from U.C. Davis, Kevin has worked at wineries in Germany and New Zealand.
The Alexander Valley is located in the northern end of the Sonoma County. With a diverse microclimate, it is no wonder that Alexander Valley Vineyards produces 17 varietal wines and proprietary blends.
