Bubblies for Springtime Celebrations--from Inexpensive to Extravagant

By Wini Moranville

Just the two of you toasting spring's arrival on a picnic blanket...a grand reception for the college grad...a toast to the June bride-to-be at a weekend shower...raising a glass to Mom on her day-or Dad on his. Whatever the occasion, plenty of spring's gathering call for bubblies. These days you can find great bottles at any price.

Barefoot Bubbly California Chardonnay Premium Extra Dry (Sparkling Wine) $10.99: It may not have those yeasty-toasty flavors that aficionados of true French Champagne seek, but plenty of people will be pleased with this clean, bright and fruity sparkler.

Yellow by Yellow Glen (Australian Sparkling Wine) $11.99: Incredibly classy for the price, with nice melon and tropical fruit flavors.

Greg Norman Estates Australia Sparkling Pinot Noir/Chardonnay ($15): It's a step up in price and in elegance, with bright flavors and a nice, moussy texture.

Schramsberg Crémant (California Sparkling Wine) $36.50: This is a splurge, but so very special, with its lusciously juicy tropical fruit and sweet ginger tones. Treat everyone to a glass of this when you bring out that fresh fruity tart you have waiting in the wings for dessert.

Remember, too, that Spain's sparkling wines are worth a look. Check out our favorites, here.
