What is the one food you like to fix when camping. And just how do you make it. My 2 best are stews and chili. In a large dutch oven. Over an open fire..
I always have salad detail and pre make them before going on the trip I make salads that have no mayo, yogurt, eggs or meat in them so they have a better shelf life. I have 3 favorites and when I take them there are no left overs. I take an asian pasta salad,a minty fresh coucous salad and a curry quinoa. We love to do brine soaked turkeys sitting on a beer can on camping trips.Tasty and fun!!!
When we have gone camping, we would almost always make a stew or a 4-bean, hot and spicy chili, it was always easier and quicker to make. But, of course we always had the hot dogs in store, just in case!!
heres a great camping stew and does'nt require using raw meat that can go bad, use beef jerky and cut into bite size pieces let simmer in your pot over an open fire until tender add a cut up potato or two depending on how many are eating and a crrot or two cut up as well let simmer and in a little while you will have a great stew. I found that if you use a starchy potato it will thicken your stew so no need for cornstarch
Another thing we used for a quick and easy marinade was bottled Italian Dressing. Just dump it in a zipper bag with your meat (beef, chicken or pork)and let it marinade for probalby 20-30 minutes and grill. Super easy and good. I did the foil packs when we went camping with the Cub Scouts. Any meat, veggies and a few seasonings. Just make sure to put the items that take longer to cook on the bottom (like the potatoes). One other trick I learned...when making capfire hot chocolate you normally don't have milk on a camping trip. Use water to make the hot chocolate and then add about a tablespoon of powdered coffee creamer. It make the hot chocolate very creamy.
Welcome back catfish!! I was missing all my old friends!! We are leaving camping this Friday. We are heading down to the Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend, IA. I am very excited. Haven't decided on food yet, although my father-in-law will be with and he is a real meat and potatoes type of guy. Loves sausages, hot dogs, and the like. We do like the foil packets that Libragay42 talked about. I think that is the one thing for sure we will do.
Catfish--good to have you back--although I was sure you weren't going too far or for too long LOL~ When I was a teen and early 20's used to go camping all the time. We did whole hog roasts a few times a year. Those were some good times. One of my favorite things is campfire coffee, made in the metal pot on top of the fire grate. For some reason it just tastes so much better made that way. perk perk perk. Coffee and the smell--I LOVE the smell of a fire. I don't camp anymore, but in the fall and winter we have bonfires at my friend's house. I love the smell of the smoke on my clothes.
Hi, catfish... glad to see you post a journal on your love for camping! I really enjoy the "smokiness" flavor from the fire in things like ribs or chicken pieces. Also like to wrap up potatoes and veges and cook in the hot coals; wrap them up in heavy-duty foil, add some butter and seasonings and you have a great side dish!
I injoy cooking just abought any thing out doors when camping .just the smell of the fire gets me going. always thinking of new thingsto cook. nothing like an open fire.
catfish...I used to like to make "Boiled Dinner" over an open camp fire. We have given up camping now but I remember how much fine it was cooking like that. I also liked to slit a banana and put some chocolate(from a candybar) and pieces of marshmallows in it. Wrap it in foil and heat to melt the chocolate and marshmallows. I loved it but my husband didn't.
