Cooking on a Budget

Cooking on a budget can be difficult, as food costs quickly add up. There are many different ways that you can stretch your food dollar for meals while still making delicious foods that everyone will enjoy. Here are some terrific tips for staying ahead of the game:

  • Clip coupons. This is a classic shopping strategy that really works. You can even team up with friends for lunch and have a coupon swap. Bring the ones you don't use and see what you can pick up from others to save some money at the store.
  • Only buy items on sale. This tactic may not always be possible, but whenever you can find items that you use all the time on sale, stock up. Also, you may want to try a new brand if it is on sale and your usual one is not. Who knows -- you may even like it better.
  • Shop more often for perishables. Picking up fresh fruits and vegetables on a regular basis is a good way to make sure they don't spoil before you have the chance to use them. In the summer, weekly farmer's markets provide the perfect opportunity; and they are typically less expensive as well. Minimizing the amount of food that goes to waste is not only cost-effective, but eco conscious as well.
  • Comparison shop. If you have several grocery stores around you, take note of the prices and see which one is most economical. Once you get an idea of what to buy where, you will start saving yourself money.

You can learn how to cook on a tight budget; it just takes a little bit of practice, smart shopping strategies and some planning. Getting your shopping routine down is the perfect way to start out ahead and get the ingredients you need at a reasonable price.
