The second installment of “Anchorman” is set to hit theaters next week.  If you loved the first movie, I am sure you are well aware of all the quotable moments.  One that always stands out is Ron Burgundy’s love of the “Scotchy Scotch Scotch.”

This phrase became so legendary that Ben and Jerry’s even released a limited edition ice cream flavor in honor of the movie!

Spiked Mango Lassi

One of the things I am looking forward to in New York is exploring the restaurant scene.  The options are, quite literally, endless.

Whenever I have visited in the past, my sister and I have always found a time to enjoy a meal at our favorite Indian restaurant on the Upper West Side.  Everything on the menu is absolutely amazing with flavors so intricate and complicated, I wouldn’t dare try to recreate them at home.  There is one, however, that I thought I could swing – a Mango Lassi.

Juiced Ice Cubes

I have written a lot about my love of healthy fruit and vegetable smoothies for breakfast or afternoon snacks.  (Check out some of my favorite recipes here.)

Some of you also enjoy “juicing” as a way to easily ingest a bunch of vitamins and minerals in one glass.  (I wrote about a 3 day juice cleanse here.)

This got me thinking.  Is there was a happy medium between the vitamin and mineral punch of juicing and the high fiber deliciousness of a blended smoothie?   Get ready, because I think I found the answer!

It’s fun to get creative with milkshakes while making an indulgent dessert that you can sip through a straw!

When I started thinking about this recipe, I had every intention of making a milkshake with chocolate brownies.  However, when I was browsing the bakery at my local grocery store, a batch of adorable mini cinnamon rolls captured my attention.  That’s when the idea for this “Cinnamon Roll Milkshake” was born!

New York Egg Cream

Cue the Linda Richman voice:  “An ‘Egg Cream’ contains neither egg nor cream.  Discuss.”

It is unknown exactly why this classic drink is called an “egg cream.”  Some say it was a way of describing its richness at a time when both eggs and cream were expensive, luxury ingredients.

Note:  My apologies to anyone who didn’t grow up with ’90’s SNL references.

12 Smoothies To Make This Summer!

5 Comments | Written on July 9, 2013 at 12:00 am , by

I am a huge smoothie aficionado, and have found that there are 3 important aspects to construct the perfect sippable meal or snack.  If you follow these simple building blocks, the creative possibilities are endless!

Keys to a great smoothie:

1)  BaseThis can be any liquid to get the smoothie going!

I have used milk (dairy and non-dairy), yogurt, kefir, coconut water, tea, and juice.   I am sure there are more options out there.

What do you like to use as the base of your smoothies?

2)  Fruit and Veggies This is where you can pack your smoothie with flavor and nutrition!

When it comes to the fruit and veggies in a smoothie, you can always turn to your favorites, but don’t be scared to think outside the box.  I love strawberries and bananas, but have experimented with kale, spinach, endive, radicchio and even carrot baby food for a smooth, pureed veggie addition!

What’s the craziest ingredient you have ever used in a smoothie?

3)  Mix-insThis is your chance to get creative, boost flavor and sneak in healthy additions.

You can add a protein boost, healthy fats, seeds, nuts, herbs, spices, citrus, cocoa, espresso, and more.   This is where you can really experiment with flavorful and trendy ingredients to create your own unique smoothie creation.

What’s your favorite boost to add to a smoothie?
