As they say, “beauty is pain”…especially when it comes to the financial pain of paying for expensive cosmetics! Between department stores, cosmetics stores, drugstores and advertisements in magazines or social media, there seems to be a surplus of cosmetics that are designed to suck consumers in, and are marketed as products that you “must-have,” now! In reality, mindlessly amassing and using cosmetics can quickly take a toll on your wallet.

While certain cosmetic products are certainly necessary and totally fun to use, you can cut extra financial costs by following these 6 Beauty Hacks. Don’t worry, saving money on cosmetics doesn’t mean deprivation—you don’t have to give up the products you need or enjoy! Whether it’s making your current cosmetic stash last a little longer, or saving money on cosmetics you’re about to buy, there are so many easy ways to start saving money on make-up while still enjoying the cosmetics you love.

As a young woman who loves make-up but also enjoys saving money, I’ve come up with a few tips for how to buy and use cosmetics, the smart way—so that you have more money for the stuff you want, and are wasting less money on the stuff you don’t! With these Beauty Hacks, you’ll be equipped with easy adjustments, fun ideas, and creative schemes to get a little more bang for your buck! I encourage you to at least try each of these Beauty Hacks to see which suits your personal beauty routine the best!

Sign-Up for Loyalty Programs

It might sound obvious, but routinely purchasing your cosmetics from one or a few retailers allows you to maximize loyalty programs. You’ll still enjoy all of the cosmetic products you know and love, but yield huge returns in the form of vouchers or free products—what’s not to love?

Sephora and Ulta Beauty, for example, are major cosmetics retailers that have points programs that can be exchanged for free gifts—Sephora even offers you a special birthday gift! Companies like these will also offer to include free testers with your online purchases—this is a great option for trying new products before shelling out for the full-sized version, or for using as travel products, instead of continuously spending money on expensive, travel-sized cosmetics!

In addition to loyalty points, companies like MAC Cosmetics offer 1 free lipstick for every 5 empty containers you return to them—good for your wallet, and for the environment!

Don’t Forget the Drugstore

Don’t overlook the humble drugstore as a great way to revamp your beauty haul! Similar to saving money through loyalty programs, consolidating your drugstore beauty purchases within one major chain—like Walgreens or CVS, for example—can be a great way to maximize coupons!

Overwhelmed by all of the cosmetic options available at your local drugstore? There are plenty of beauty bloggers who post Youtube beauty tutorials that highlight their favorite drugstore beauty purchases, and the best ways to use them.

Look For Beauty Solutions In Your Fridge and Pantry

Here’s some food for thought: for the cheapest and easiest beauty solutions, look no further than your kitchen—in your fridge and pantry, to be exact! Everyday household items like oats, yoghurt, honey, and sugar have high nutritional content and make great, natural cosmetic products that are far cheaper than store-bought options.

Here are some of my favorite options:

 – Homemade Face Masks: Instead of paying upwards of $5 for each single-use Face Mask, try a homemade version! For a moisturizing face mask, try mashing 1/2 an avocado with 2 eggs, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and 2 tablespoons of honey for a Vitamin E boost. For an exfoliating face mask, mash 1 ripe banana with 1/2 cup of rolled oats, 1/4 cup greek yoghurt, and 2 tablespoons coarse salt, to buff away dead skin.

– D.I.Y. Lip Scrub: Perfect for the colder months, a homemade lip scrub keeps your lips soft and supple! Try mixing 2 tablespoons of oil (preferably nut oil), 2 tablespoons of coarse sugar, and your favorite essence—like peppermint, or vanilla—for a simple cold-weather solution. Just try not to eat any, while you’re at it!

– Cucumber Discs: It’s a tried-and-true classic, but cucumber discs are great for reducing inflammation and puffiness around your eyes! Try pre-slicing cucumber and keeping in ice-cold water for the best effect—it’s great for snacking on, too!

Discover Which Cosmetics Pull Double Duty

Don’t just save money in your wallet but space in your cosmetics bag with this tip! Discover how your favorite cosmetics can serve more than one purpose, so you can halve the amount of products you’re spending money on. Some cosmetics, like this e.l.f. Under Eye Concealer and Highlighter are specifically designed to act as both a concealer and highlighter, meaning you get two products for the price of one! Some cosmetics might require you to be more creative with their application—here are some of my favorite suggestions:

– Brow Wiz by Anastasia Beverly Hills is an eyebrow pencil that can also double-up as a pencil eyeliner.

– Rosebud Salve is a convenient, portable balm for dry cuticles that can be used as both a lip tint and cream blush when you’re on-the-go.

– Instead of buying a separate shade of eyeshadow, try using bronzer to naturally highlight your eyes—just use your normal eyeshadow brush to apply, and enjoy the results! I recommend this MAC matte bronzer for natural definition, both on your face and eyes.

Host a Cosmetics Swap Party With Your Friends

Unused bath products that you received for the holidays, but don’t love? Lipstick that just isn’t the right shade for you? Nail polish that you don’t use, but you can’t return to the store? One woman’s trash is another’s treasure! Host a Cosmetic-Swapping Party with your girlfriends—agree to contribute the same number of cosmetic items, place in a pile, and swap until everyone’s content!

If some products have been lightly used, set up a counter with rubbing alcohol in spritz bottles, plus cotton pads and Q-Tips—this will ensure that everyone’s second-hand cosmetics are sanitary and basically brand new for swapping!

Extend the Life of Your Favorite Lipstick

It’s great to find that perfect shade of lipstick…until you wear it every day, use it up, and have to buy a new one! Extend the life of your favorite lipsticks by melting down the product at the bottom of the canister—instead of throwing it away—with these simple steps. By melting rather than disposing the last of your lipstick, you can save yourself some cash in the long-run—every dollar counts!

1. With a Q-tip, scoop the remaining lipstick into a small, empty container (preferably glass, but you could also use thick plastic).

2. Melt the lipstick with a hairdryer pointed towards the container, at a ten inch distance (to ensure the container itself doesn’t burn)!

3. Place the container in the freezer to chill for 30 minutes or until solid.

4. Use a lip brush to use every last bit of lipstick!
