We all know a whole lobster is a decadent treat, but it can be intimidating to figure out the best way to get every single delicious morsel.  Today we are going to show you an easy step-by-step way to eat a whole lobster!

First of all, don’t take a tip from the movie “Splash.”  It is not advisable to try and bite right through the shell at the dinner table.

Start with the proper tools.  You will need a a cracker to break the shell, as well as something long and skinny to help draw out all the meat.  These can often be purchased in sets specifically for cracking and eating lobster.  I also find a pair of kitchen shears to be very helpful.

Start by removing the claws from the body.

Then separate the tail from the head.

Remove the bottom half of the claw and gently shake the small side of the pincher until it releases.

Now you get to start using the tools!   Crack the claw to help remove the claw meat (my favorite bites from the lobster).

If you make a small crack at the tip of the claw, you can easily push the claw meat out the bottom.  This will help keep the claw meet beautifully intact.

At the point you can also crack the other part of the claw arm and scoop out any delicious morsels you can find.

Now it’s time to attack the largest part of the lobster, the tail.  I like to use kitchen shears to cut the underside of the tail to remove the meat.

Once you cut all the way to the top, the beautiful meat is revealed and can easily be removed from the shell.

There you have it!  Two fantastic lobster claws and one outstanding lobster tail, ready for a squeeze of lemon and a quick dip in some drawn butter.

Cracking a whole lobster can be a bit messy, so there’s no shame in a bib over your clothes or some newspapers to cover your table.
