Kitchen Makeover

I have a confession to make…

I am a food professional, and I have the world’s goofiest kitchen.  Whew.  There, I said it.

For years I have been cooking, developing recipes, taking photographs and shooting videos while hiding this secret.

Keep reading for the full story and to see the before and after transformation!

The space is small, but that’s ok.  Many of us cook in small kitchens.  But I have been dealing with fun things like a stove with a door handle that was held on with superglue.  (Yep, superglue.)  A dishwasher that was so loud it sounded like a train running through my home.  A large and awkward fridge I got second hand and was on its last legs.  And my favorite, drawers that only opened part way.  Seriously.  Since 2004 I have been twisting and turning like a Cirque du Soleil contortionist just to reach a serving spoon.  Take a look:

The worst offense of all?  My beloved stand mixer hidden the shadows because of the awkward space.  Nobody puts baby in a corner…

Finally, I decided it was time for a change and I knew exactly where to turn – KitchenAid.  I have known and loved their iconic stand mixer since I was old enough to reach the countertop.  I trust their products and I couldn’t wait to research what they had to offer in terms of large appliances.  I read the specs of every single refrigerator, range, microwave/hood combo, and dishwasher.  I measured, and then measured again.  Finally, I found the perfect appliances for the space!

I decided to go with stainless steel, which then, of course made me want to change the wall color as well.  The place could use a coat of paint, so I grabbed some brushes, tried some samples and went to town!  The space went from an outdated dingy yellow to a modern and chic grey.  It only took three rolls of tape, two drop cloths and one near fall off a ladder to get it done.  It took me a few days, but I did all the work myself!

Then it was moving day.  The old appliances were hauled away and one cabinet was removed to make space for the new fridge.   I was so excited when the big truck pulled up, I could hardly contain myself!

When everything was said and done, I was blown away.  The stunning beauty and unparalleled quality of the KitchenAid appliances left me speechless.

Instead of a cheap microwave tucked away in the corner, I chose this built-in microwave/hood combo to sit above the range.

This allowed space for the bright red stand mixer to take center stage on the countertop!

For the range, I was super excited to try something new, a double oven!  This is the Architect Series II Freestanding Gas Range with Even Heat True Convection System.  This means I can cook two different recipes simultaneously, at different temperatures.  There are so many days when I can cooking and photographing so many different dishes at once, this is absolutely perfect for my lifestyle.  Also, the oven can be convection or traditional with the touch of a button.  Plus, the stovetop has not 4 but 5 burners.  I am completely obsessed with the oblong one in the center.  Finally something that fits my favorite oval shaped Dutch oven!  The grate can even be swapped out with a cast iron flat top griddle.  I first used it to make pancakes and it was a dream – so easy to flip!

When I first used the Superba Series dishwasher, I actually thought I did something wrong.  It was so whisper quiet I seriously didn’t know it was on.  Nothing but a tiny little “beep” to let you know when it’s done.  Needless to say the dishes were sparkling clean.

And then there’s the fridge.  This is the supermodel of refrigerator/freezers.  Tall, thin, stunning.  It is the Architect Series II  Right-Hand Door Swing with 20.5 cu. ft. of space.

And, get this…. I can now actually OPEN my drawers.  Ahhhh!  I can’t tell you how this little detail has changed my culinary existence.

I stand back and look at this new kitchen with awe and wonder how I lived for so many years with my old appliances!  If any of you ever have any questions about the KitchenAid products, don’t hesitate to ask.  I have only used them for a short time, and I am already in love!  I can’t wait to get cooking and share the recipes with all of you!
