Have you ever looked at a spaghetti squash and wondered where to begin? I mean, how can something resembling pasta come from that crazy gourd! I am here to break it all down for you. This is a step-by-step lesson on how to prepare spaghetti squash!
Keep reading for an easy visual tutorial…
Step 1: Select your squash
I would recommend erring on the side of a smaller squash. You can get a lot of “spaghetti” out of there, more than you would think. Plus, when its on the smaller side, it is easier to cut and handle.
Step 2: Gather your tools:
All you will need is a baking pan and a large, sharp knife.
Step 3: Slice the squash in half
Believe me when I tell you this is the hardest part of the process! It takes a little elbow grease and you have to be really careful with that sharp knife.
Step 4: Scoop out the seeds and stringy pulp.
Save the seeds, they’re great for toasting! Follow the same process as you would to toast pumpkin seeds.
This is what it will look like when you are done.
Step 5: Place the squash cut side down in your baking pan.
Poke several times with a knife to allow steam to escape. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30-40 minutes, until tender.
Step 6: Pull “spaghetti” from the squash
Be very careful, the squash will be piping hot! Using a fork, gently pull the spaghetti. It should come right out very easily. Magic!
It really is unbelievable how much you can get from one squash. Keep pulling with the fork until you get down to the skin.
Step 7: Serve!
There are countless ways to enjoy this healthy pasta alternative. It’s not only healthy, it also happens to be vegan, gluten-free, and delicious!

Thank you for this tutorial!! My husband has been putting water in the bottom of a dish and microwaving it, but it never turned out quite right. We will give this a shot
This is perfect for the fall season and it looks so freaking delicious! Thanks! =D
This is a great tutorial. I think a lot of people shy away from this vegetable because it looks too hard to cook.
It took me until I was 58 years old to finally try Spaghetti Squash. We love it with a red pasta sauce with ground beef and Italian sausage. Just add a little cheese and a slice of toasted garlic bread and life is good.
