Three Ingredient Low-Fat Creamsicle Cake

Pinterest is absolutely overflowing with creative ideas from across the web and I am completely addicted.   (By the way, follow my account and I will gladly follow you back!)

The other night I was browsing around and came upon this genius concept for a three ingredient dessert using only a cake mix, Greek yogurt, and water.  It seemed almost too good to be true, so I just had to try it for myself!  That’s when the idea for this orange creamsicle cake was born.

Keep reading to find out how to make this Three Ingredient Low-Fat Creamsicle Cake!

The pin I found was for a basic three ingredient cake using Greek yogurt.  Now, I am a HUGE fan of Greek yogurt so my ears perked up right away.  The pin said all you have to do is combine a box of cake mix with a container of Greek yogurt and 1 cup of water to make a low fat cake.  Genius right?

But I wanted to take it a step further.  What if I gave it a flavor twist by using juice instead of water?  Voila!  Orange Creamsicle Cake.

If you want to boost the orange flavor even more, I suggest adding the zest of an orange into the cake batter.  Then, if you want to get all fancy with presentation, you can even save a bit of the peel for garnish on the completed cake.

The result was absolutely divine!  Not only was this cake unbelievably easy to prepare, but I did the math and it comes in at only about 200 calories and 4 grams of fat per slice!  The Greek yogurt adds moisture and richness to the cake without added calories and fat.

In the end, the creamy yogurt combined with the orange juice and zest made the cake taste just like creamsicle.  Thank you Pinterest for introducing me to this amazing idea!  I am not sure who posted the original pin, but it has already been re-pinned many times on my account.  If you like this Creamsicle Cake, feel free to re-pin it to your boards as well!

Creamsicle Cake

1 box (15.25 oz) White Cake Mix

1 container (6 oz) non-fat Greek yogurt, plain

1 cup orange juice

freshly grated orange zest, optional

powdered sugar, optional

In a large mixing bowl, combine cake mix, Greek yogurt and orange juice.  Include the zest of one orange, if desired.  Pour batter into a greased 8 x8 inch square pan.  Bake at 350 degrees for 30-33 minutes.  Slice into 9 pieces.  Garnish with a dusting of powdered sugar and orange peel, if desired.

Nutrition information per slice:  Calories 201, Fat 4.4 grams, Carbs 40 grams, Fiber 1.1 grams, Protein 3.3 grams.

Tip:  A salt shaker filled with powdered sugar makes the perfect tool for dusting desserts.  I got this one at the 99 cent store and keep it in my pantry for an easy way to garnish any dessert plate!

This were delicious! I decided to make for a bake sale. I made one a 8×8 size ( it took more like 45 minutes to cook the cake, I kept adding 5 minutes until the center was done). I made the other 3 batches as cupcakes. The aroma in the house was wonderful and they tasted fantastic. I made with the optional zest.

Hi! How long did u bake the cupcakes? same as the recipe above? Or the time on the box for the cupcakes? Thinking about making them later this week as cupcakes…thanks! :)

FYI to my post I just made. I used a cake mx I had in my cupboard it was BC and the ounces were 16.25 not sure if this is why it took longer to bake. Thanks Kristina for posting this.

I know it totally takes away the benefit of a low calorie dessert, but do you think cream cheese icing would be good on top??? I’m going to make it tomorrow, and my friend suggested the cream cheese icing (total sweet tooth :) )

    Hi Kait,

The great thing about a recipe like this is that you are free to make it your own! Add a frosting, or change the flavors of the juice, yogurt or mix. Have fun and enjoy!

Kristina this sounds absolutely fabulous. I have been trying to duplicate the creamsicle flavor in many desserts as I just love it. But this one with the cake sounds like you hit the nail on the head!! And only 3 ingredients! Now this is my kind of cake. LOVE it!! N.

I made this today with Orange supreme cake mix, greek yogurt and orange juice. Awesome flavor but it was crumbly.

    Linda says:

I made this cake today, but only had a box of yellow cake mix in the house (and it was a tad over 18 ozs.), so I used it and added the plain, nonfat, greek yogurt and 2 extra tablespoons of orange juice. The batter was VERY thick and had to bake a little longer. The flavor was very good, but the cake was very dense (probably should have used at least 2 more tablespoons of juice). I’ll try this again with the right size mix. Thanks for sharing your experiments, Kristina.
PS. The raw batter tastes wonderful!

I think this will be wonderful with a simple orange glaze…mix 2lbs powdered sugar (one bag) and 1/4 c. Orange juice…whisk together and pour over cake then chill. Yum!

Holy cow. It was a hit with my usually anti-health food husband and his merry band of mechanic coworkers. I did substitute an orange drink mix for the water and added a handful of dehydrated strawberries prior to baking. Super moist with little chewy fruit bits scattered about…. It didn’t even require icing!

I found your cake recipe on Pinterest. THANK YOU! It’s currently baking in my oven – for the 2nd time! Taste tested by many(I brought it to work). Everyone loves it, even my kids. I love how dense and moist it is. I didn’t even cut it in 9 pieces, but 12′s and even the smaller pieces are satisfying enough! Have you ever tried it with vanilla yogurt?

Does this cake need to go in fridge once it has cooled? I have tried to make it twice, the first time I covered it completely and second layed a sheet of wax paper over it. Both times the next morning it looked like the cake sweat, it is very moist and soggy. Any idea?

Mine is in the oven right now! Can’t wait to taste it! I made it with a white cake mix, vanilla greek yogurt, the OJ + the fresh juice from an orange! I am planning on topping it with cool whip as an icing… I’ll have to let ya’ll know how it is!

  • 34
    Caitlin says:

Well, my cake tasted great!! It was really flat but I think I had too much liquid in it. I probably should have omitted a bit of the OJ to make room for my freshly squeezed orange juice… but the whipped topping as icing was definitely a good idea! :)

    Joyce says:

I wonder what the sugar content is from using the orange juice? I have to watch my sugar intake so I wonder if I used water and then added the powder from some orange sugar free jello if I would get similar results. I probably will have to make this a couple of times to get the right amount. Might be worth it to have a dessert that I can eat.

    Sue says:

I made this using Dannon orange cream yogurt instead of plain. It was denser and less fluffy than a regular cake, but very tasty and not overly sweet. The center of mine was not quite done in that length of time either but my husband thought that part tasted like custard. :)

Totally excited about this! I omitted the orange juice, and used water instead. Added 2 tsp of almond extract to the sugar free yellow cake mix. Also, I decided to see what happened when I used 3 egg whites. If my calculations are right, should be about 135 calories per cupcake! I can totally do that! Hope they turn out just as yummy! Thanks for the inspiration!! (The batter is delicious..) haha

I loved the idea of just 3 ingredients but all I had in the house was Cherry flavored Greek Yogurt (80 calories) and an Angel Food cake mix so I mixed those two with the 1 cup of water. It got all fizzy and light as I mixed it. Im baking it in a Bundt pan now.. will post results :) I figure if I cut the cake into 12 pieces, thats 146 calories per slice unless I put powdered sugar on top

I used orange cream yogurt and after I got it out of the oven I poked holes in the top with a straw and poured more orange juice on top to make it really moist. After it cooled I topped with whip cream. It was a big hit.
