Green Pea Hummus – Peas Recipe Contest Winner

Peas are so beautiful in the spring and I couldn’t wait to see which recipes came out on top during our latest contest!  This week, the judges honored Angela Gray, for her colorful and inspired “Green Pea Hummus.”

Angela says, “As soon as I saw the Pea Contest I thought of  hummus. My family loves hummus and my husband had just brought home edamame hummus for us to try. Well I thought if you can make hummus out of edamame then why not peas?  Peas are mild in flavor and I thought they were a perfect vehicle for the ingredients in hummus. Fortunately  I was correct and my recipe received a lot of love from the Better Recipes community!  I feel so honored and blessed , I love to cook and I do enjoy coming up with new recipes.”  

I loved her addition of the chipotle seasoning to the hummus.  It gave the dip a nice kick and a bit of heat not usually seen in a classic hummus recipe.  I even made homemade pita chips for dipping and sprinkled them with a little additional chipotle!  Feel free to omit or adjust the amount depending on your personal taste.

Green Pea Hummus  (click here to view and print recipe)

12 oz Fresh or Frozen Green Peas

2 cloves Fresh Garlic

2 Tbsp Tahini

3 Tbsp Fresh Lemon Juice

2 Tbsp Olive Oil

3/4 tsp Salt

1/4 tsp Black Pepper

1/4 – 1/2 tsp Chipotle Seasoning *optional

1/2 tsp Salt, to taste


Cook peas till barely tender and do not use canned. Drain and run under cold water. Add the peas and the rest of the ingredients to a food processor or blender. Process until it is fairly smooth, adding 1 tbsp of water at a time until desired consistency.

**TIP Make sure and stir your Tahini well before measuring ! **

Serve with toasted pita chips or tortilla chips.


Everyone has a preference as to how thick or thin they like their hummus. Process it to your likeness. I prefer mine smooth. My family loves to eat their hummus on Blue Tortilla Chips. But it is also wonderful with cut up vegetables and pita chips. A couple of weeks ago my honey brought home some Edamame Hummus and I was blown away at how wonderful it was. So when I saw this contest this is the first thing I thought of ! Green pea hummus is milder than chick pea hummus and makes a beautiful presentation.

The Reader’s Choice Winner was Pleasing Pea Salad with Bacon and Eggs from Dennis Keefer, a.k.a. “domake.”

Dennis says, “My best cooking skill is chopping. My favorite recipes are ones that require mostly assembling and not a lot of cooking. Every time I make this salad, everyone seems to love it, even those who say they don’t like peas!”
