Brunch Recipe Contest Winner – Monte Cristo Rolls
The winning recipe from our “Brunch” contest is absolutely perfect for entertaining holiday guests this weekend! If you have family coming in from out of town, this simple yet elegant take on a classic recipe is a wonderful addition to your brunch menu.
Huge congratulations to our latest winner, Edwina Gadsby, for her “Monte Cristo Rolls.” The classic sandwich takes on a new twist by using frozen puff pastry sheets. This is also a great way to use leftover holiday ham and turkey from your family meals!
1 cup Shredded Swiss Cheese
1/2 cup Chopped Cooked Smoked Ham
1/2 cup Chopped Cooked Roast Turkey
1/2 a 17.3 Oz. Pkg. Frozen Puff Pastry, 1 sheet, thawed
1 1/2 Tbsp Honey Mustard
1 Egg, beaten
Powdered Sugar, for dusting, optional
Preserves or Jam, of your choice
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly grease a large baking sheet.
Toss together Swiss cheese, ham and turkey; set aside.
Unfold puff pastry on a lightly floured surface; roll into a 15-by-10-inch rectangle. Spread evenly with honey mustard, leaving a 1/4-inch border; sprinkle with the cheese mixture. Brush edges of puff pastry with some of the beaten egg. Starting at a short side, roll up like a jelly roll. Cut into 8 equal slices and place 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheet. Brush tops with remaining beaten egg.
Bake until golden brown and cheese is melted, 20 to 25 minutes. Cool briefly on wire rack. Sprinkle with powdered sugar; if desired.
Serve warm with preserves (or jam).

How did you come up with your winning recipe?
Monte Cristo sandwiches are popular in our house, but I have always found them somewhat labor intensive to prepare. I set out to streamline the recipe without sacrificing any of the flavor. Puff pastry turned out to be a simple and delicious alternative.
What inspired you to enter the Better Recipes weekly contest?
Peer pressure! So many of the talented cooks who have been past winners I have the good fortune to know. Also, brunch is one of my favorite ways to entertain and I am always experimenting to come up with something a little different to serve.
Why do you think your recipe stood out to the judges?
The familiar and much-loved flavors of a Monte Cristo transformed into a roll instead of the traditional sandwich is probably what made my recipe stand out. In addition, my recipe is very user friendly; the steps are simple enough that even the kids can help in the preparation.
Do you have any advice for others interested in entering our recipe contests?
Just do it! I think many people spend a lot of time thinking about entering and never actually get around to doing it. This contest is so unique in that it has such diverse weekly themes. If you have a special recipe that fits the criteria. . . enter it!
Do you have any plans for the prize money?
The prize money is going to come in very handy when those after the holiday credit card bills start arriving.
Any plans if you should win the grand prize?
Building a new deck for outdoor entertaining would be at the top of list.
Do you have any other kitchen tips, recipe advice or culinary wisdom to share with the Better Recipes readers?
If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Don’t get discouraged if you have a few failures in the kitchen or a dish doesn’t come out exactly as you planned. Think of it as a learning experience and try to have fun. A lot of wonderful recipes started out as accidents.
