I am always looking for new ways to jazz up a pound of ground beef for dinner.  There are the old standbys such as sloppy joes, tacos, or meatloaf.  But what if you are in the mood for something a little different?  That’s when I turn to this recipe for Salisbury Steak!  The patties are as easy to make as a hamburger, and the mushroom gravy is simply irresistible.  Serve along side your favorite mashed potatoes and dinner is done!

Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

For Patties:
1-1/2 pounds ground round
1-3/4 cups soft, freshly made bread crumbs
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
1/4 cup chopped green pepper
2 Tablespoons steak sauce (like A-1)
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 Tablespoon vegetable oil

For Mushroom Gravy:
2 Tablespoons butter
2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms
1 shallot, minced
2 Tablespoons flour
1/4 cup dry white wine
14.25 ounce can beef broth
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme

Combine all patty ingredients, except oil, in a large bowl.  Shape into 6 equal-sized patties.  Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.  Add patties and cook, turning once, until patties are cooked through, about 5-6 minutes per side.  While patties are cooking, prepare gravy:  Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat; add mushrooms and shallot.  Cook about 5 minutes or until mushrooms are golden, stirring constantly.  Add flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.  Add wine, reduce heat, and simmer for 2 minutes.  Add remaining ingredients and simmer, uncovered, for 6-7 minutes, or until mixture is reduced by one-fourth, stirring occasionally.  Spoon gravy over each patty and serve.  Serves 6.
